Just yesterday I was asked to join photo project between photographers, and the idea is to photograph a monthly portrait of ourselves. If you know any photographers then you probably know that we hate to get our pictures taken more than anyone. I guess because we are just used to taking the pictures, and being in them. I have gotten used to (and quite comfortable with) not being in pictures. So I thought this would be a great challenge for me. But believe me, as soon as I push the "publish post" button my cheeks will immediately turn bright red. So please be kind. :)

I met Brian and Lisa when I was about 21 years old. We met on a tiny little ski hill, back in Toronto. My friends and I would build snowboard jumps on a small ski hill, at night after it was closed. We would hike up to the top of the hill and take the jump. One night Brian and Lisa were there...and the rest, as they say, is history.

Sarah and I have been friends since we were seven. She has been a constant in my life and I just love how easy it is to be friends with Sarah. It's never hard with her, which I have always appreciated. She's in Calgary for a few days so I took a few shots of her while I had the chance! It was so cold and crazy windy! This took about 2 minutes. :)

This was a styled bridal shoot that I put together with my friend Eryn as my model. The reason I did this was to show the value of having a bridal session. We had lots of time to shoot, with no pressure of a tight timeline and we were also able to pick the BEST time of day (in my humble opinion) to get beautiful light for the photographs. Please contact me for details. Bridal Sessions can be added on to existing wedding packages or purchased separately.

Thank you SO much to Amanda of Add Love for creating the gorgeous bouquet and hair piece. She did an amazing job! She is located in Lethbridge, but comes to Calgary often and is also great at communicating through email and by phone.
Another thank you to Corine (Eryn's friend) for doing a fantastic job of making Eryn look like a bride! The hair just blew me away.
Last, but not least, thanks to Eryn. You were gorgeous and such a great sport. We were seriously eaten alive by mosquitos. I even had to edit them off of her body. Not to mention the very prickly weeds we had to walk through and the deer we came across that scared the hell out of us (more me than her actually).

Since shooting Melissa's wedding last year we have kept in touch and have become friends. She has been a great supporter of mine, so I was ecstatic when she asked me to do her maternity photos (and soon enough, her newborn photos). When I went to her house for the session I was stunned at how amazing she looks! How does one look so amazing at 8 months pregnant?? She is definitely a "glower" (new word, you can totally use it). I wish I was a good writer, so that I could tell you how cool Jenn and Luis are...but I'll give a try. To start, Jenn is a med student - that's always really cool in my books. Smart people impress me. :) And Luis has restored a 100 year old house in downtown Calgary that is beyond awesome. It's this yellow heritage house right in the city, and if you're from Calgary you know how rare these kinds of places are. And what a great job he did. It made a great backdrop for their engagement photos. There was something interesting to look at at every turn.

Jenn and Luis are so sweet. I had so much fun with them that snowy afternoon in spring (we are having a never-ending winter here)! Thank you Jenn and Luis, for inviting me into your gorgeous home and doing silly things so that I could get the shots I wanted! I can't wait for your wedding.

My Mom is here for a visit this weekend (from Toronto), so I thought I'd take advantage of the nice weather and take a few shots of her with her grandchildren. Calgary gets spurts of warm weather throughout the winter that are called chinooks.

Here is Wikipedia's definitition: The reference to a wind or weather system, simply "a Chinook", originally meaning a warming wind from the ocean into the interior regions of the Pacific Northwest (the Chinook people lived near the ocean, along the lower Columbia River). A strong Chinook can make snow one foot deep almost vanish in one day. The snow partly melts and partly evaporates in the dry wind. Chinook winds have been observed to raise winter temperature, often from below −20°C (−4°F) to as high as 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F) for a few hours or days, then temperatures plummet to their base levels. The greatest recorded temperature change in 24 hours was caused by Chinook winds on January 15, 1972, in Loma, Montana; the temperature rose from -48°C (-56°F) to 9°C (49°F).

I know it's really late for a Christmas post, but I was sick as a dog for about two weeks at the beginning of January so I'm still catching up. :( Anyway, here's a little peek into Christmas 2010 at our house. It was a typical Christmas I think: lots of laughs, presents and even some holiday cheer...and yes that is a bottle of Tums on the booze counter. What can I say, we're old. :)

I love a snowy, winter wedding. And Sara and John are such a sweet, lovely couple. Sara worked so hard on their wedding, DIYing (yes I made that a verb) as many details as she could. She made everything from the Save The Date's and Wedding Invitations to the bouquets and boutonnieres. It was so amazing to see it all. And there were too many personal touches to count! But one running theme was music. Both Sara and John play guitar and Sara performs live. She is also a school teacher that teaches music as well as kindergarten. Sara's music can be found here.

I had so much fun doing the creative photos with Sara and John. They were so open to my crazy location ideas and had some of their own awesome ideas as well. It was such a great collaboration. Thank you for being so fun Sara and John! You are SO nice and sweet and I can't say enough nice things about you both. Your wedding was an absolute joy to document. And congratulations on your marriage!

My Nanna {a personal post}

Man I wish I was a good writer! I always envy those blogs where the blog write ups are so moving and witty and full of interesting information (especially Brianna Phelan at The Last Forty Percent). I wish I was a good writer because I would love to tell you all about the most amazing woman I know: my Nanna. And no, I didn't spell it wrong. That IS the correct spelling (just ask the brits!). My Nanna is a young, witty and extrememly brilliant 93 year old woman from northern Ontario. She is very petite. 4' 11" I think. But what she lacks in size she makes up for in beauty, intellect and wit. She is the daintiest of ladies, but she belches louder than most men (sorry Nanna). When she retired (she was a working mom like me) she travelled the world. And I mean the WORLD. She has been everywhere. She knows more about current events than any politician, she goes to lectures every week at the University and she does the Globe and Mail cryptic crossword every day. She emails, surfs the web, gardens, makes herself dinner and she still drives. She got one question wrong on her drivers exam last year and she is still kicking herself. If you want to know the secret to longevity, ask my Nanna. Keep your body and your mind active and eat a cookie every day. Oh, and she can kick your a$$ at Trivial Pursuit!

My Little Sister {a personal post}

Christmas day was the first time I'd seen my sister in over a year. She brought her boyfriend here for a little vaca to do some snowboarding in the rocky mountains. Being with her makes me so happy and so sad all at the same time...happy to be able to see her, sad that I don't have enough time to spend with her. Brandy and Dan are such an awesome couple. They are so nice, fun, easy-going and just great to be around. Brandy and Dan were married this past weekend, and if you live in Calgary you know that it was cold and there was a lot of snow (and it still is and there still is!). We've had some pretty intense weather here for the last couple of weeks, but that didn't stop Brandy and Dan from enjoying their day. The had a great attitude and it was obvious that they were so happy to be married. To them, it was the best day of the year. Congratulations Brandy and Dan! You really are amazing people and I am so happy that you had such a perfect wedding.

I saw these berries everywhere this year, and they always caught my eye. And on this occasion I had my camera. :) It was a crappy summer, but there was some good foliage - something we don't see a lot of in these parts.

Ceremony & Reception: Ric's Grill

Tom and Dennis were suppose to have a small ceremony with four people in their living room. It ended up being around 35 people at a restaurant! And it was so perfect. It was an intimate ceremony and reception in a private dining room at a dimly lit, romantic restaurant that Tom and Dennis know and enjoy (it's down the street from their house!). Tom and Dennis were so nice and easy-going and I could tell that they were really enjoying the evening while sharing such a special event with close friends and family. It was an honour to document such a special wedding for two wonderful people. Thank you Tom and Dennis! All the best to you both.

Nils {Calgary Baby Photographer}

Yesterday I got to photograph Nils, isn't he the cutest little dude?! And his parents, Renee and Johan are so nice and full of life. Such a warm family that just makes your heart melt. I had such a great time with them on the beautiful fall day that we were so lucky to get. Thank you Nils, Renee and Johan! I had such a great time photographing your beautiful family.

Kathy + Dave {Calgary Engagement Photographer}

This day was a whirlwind of events. We drove to Dave's grandparent's farm in Water Valley to take these photos, this past weekend. I was so excited because it was our first weekend of good weather in weeks. The drive to Water Valley was breath taking and if I didn't have to be somewhere I probably would have stopped every 10 minutes to take pictures. The scenery is amazing. Anyway, as soon as we got to Water Valley it just started pouring. Black sky and everything. We decided to wait it out for a bit and wouldn't you know 10 minutes after we arrived the clouds parted and the sun came out! It was a bit wet, but the light was gorgeous. There was even some steam coming off the bridge we were shooting on! So cool. But that's not the end of the whirlwind. A bird narrowly missed flying into my face. And I'm pretty sure it was on purpose. Then we almost got bounced off the property by Dave's grandparent's neighbour who was giving us an earful about being on private property - until he realized who Dave was.

But look how sweet Kathy and Dave are! They are getting married next summer in Banff and I'm SO looking forward to it. Thanks for the adventure Kathy and Dave! Can't wait for the wedding. Hopefully there won't be any birds plotting my doom. :)

This is a personal post: I've been blog-stalking some other photographers that I love and I'm noticing that the ones that are pregnant are taking great pictures of their baby's room. So I thought that because Maddy is going to be in a bed soon, that it's my last chance to photograph her baby room. I finally put a few things on the walls and took some pictures. Her and her brother were sick today, or else I would have taken some pictures of her too. You'll just have to wait until her birthday. :)
